Oldsmobile HDR

Allow me to start off by saying I love this image. It's beautiful, it's powerful, and it's original.

And to a writer like me, it's also poetic.

Overgrown and abandoned, sitting derelict in a field somewhere, this ancient Olds has come to the end of its life. Its popped hood says that it has already been scavenged for parts and is now just a shell, waiting for nature to completely consume it.

Though it is now a shell, though it has driven many hundreds of thousands of miles and though it has now reached the end of its highway, it still has dignity. It has the power of its size and stern, rugged appearance. It still towers over the grasses that will one day return it to the soil from which all things must be formed.

For that reason I believe this has a reason to be here, a message to be conveyed. I speculate that this tough beast represents the final years for many of us. The son of a molten steel mother and an engineering father, the Oldsmobile will never go down without a fight. It will keep its dignity and its legacy to the very end, as will some of the people who put it together so long ago.
